Find a salon with staff trained in curly hair cutting.
This goes without saying, but there’s a big difference between cutting straight hair and cutting curly hair. On top of that, no curl is exactly the same! Because of this, it’s important to find a salon that doesn’t just “do” curly as well as straight, but a salon that truly specializes in cutting both types of hair.
Work with a stylist who won’t take off too much length.
One of the things that makes curly hair unique is that it can recoil after you cut it. In other words, the amount of length you lose will look like “more” because the hair tends to bounce back after each cut. Make sure your stylist understands this and ask them to always err on the conservative side, even when they’re just trimming your hair.
Watch out for red flags. 
Curly haircuts require very little (if any) tension. In other words, be wary of any stylist who pulls your curls straight and then cuts them. Doing so makes it difficult to gauge how long the cut will be and could result in a shorter length than you want, not to mention uneven curls.
Additionally, shy away from anyone who talks about “layers” when discussing styles for curly hair. In fact, it’s pretty safe to say a stylist who tries to convince you that layers are a good option for your curly hair is not the stylist for you.
